I was thinkin of buying a C2D MBP 17" + 23" ACD, but no i've been thinking of going for a 24" iMac and later for the cheapest Macbook. It will be still some time thought, this G5 iMac is still running good for me. Maybe when Leopard is released.

When did 'reached out' become a better phrase to use than simply 'contacted'?

When one is trying to impart a sense of altruism to the actors, one says they "reached out." This implies a wholesome, good-faith effort to initiate dialog with a possibly resistant adversary. When the adversary does not comment, the correct framing in this case will be that they "refused" to reply, even if they simply had no response at all.

    Basic spin doctoring ;)

As far as reducing thickness goes, you have to kill the Ethernet and Firewire ports before you have to kill Superdrive.

Ethernet and Firewire are toast. Smaller bezel/smaller footprint, higher resolution screen, additional Thunderbolt port, possibly additional USB port (perhaps a 3.0 port), larger trackpad, SSD (or some flash equivalent) standard--these seem like obvious possibilities.

Not sure how they can improve on the design, to be honest. And, as others have pointed out, not sure how they maintain the Air lineup if the MBP is going to adopt most of its features.

I am not sure about other states, but in CA, Law Enforcement is specifically required to announce DUI checkpoints and provide an alternative route. Asking to have these applications removed from app stores contradicts the law regarding DUI checkpoints. Gotta love Politicians. Write a law then contradict it. Awesome.

It is the same in Florida, DUI checkpoints are held to be constitutional where there is notice of when they will be operational, what traffic will be affected and the notice is published before they are set up. I would imagine some of these apps rely on notice in the newspaper in addition to community reporting. But who cares about that whole 4th Amendment thing. :(

Rent-a-cops have guns? And shoot people IN THE HEAD? I'm amazed.

That said, this is pretty ******. Sure, the guy was a criminal lowlife, and he certainly deserved punishment, but I don't think he deserved to get killed. Oh well.

I have wondered about this issue too. I think it depends on the state, when it is legal to use deadly force varies widely. Some states you are allowed to shoot someone to stop any "forcible felony". Other states you're only allowed to shoot someone if they have you cornered and you have substantial reason to fear for your life.

Why do people seem convinced Apple won't release something like an SLR or video camera?

Because, AFAIK, there's no market for a "Think Differently" camera. A professional photographer doesn't need a camera to match their MacBook Pro, they want one that was made by a pro camera maker.

I think this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. It seems highly unlikely a 23 inch imac would emerge (or even should emerge). On top of that a bigger imac with Merom? Makes no sense, a bigger imac should have Conroe. ;)

I've searched for address bus width for the Core 2 line, but haven't found anything. It is, however, not likely that Intel downgraded the width from the previous models, which would mean either a 36 or a 40 bit bus. Also note that AMD's K8 (Athlon 64, Sempron and Opteron) also feature a 40 bit address bus and not 64 as someone might think. I also think that the G5 uses a 40 or 42 bit address bus, so it's pretty much the same there too.

So, if Core 2 has a 40 bit bus (which is likely) you end up with 1TB of addressable memory space.

Also, Core 2 CPUs are fully capable of running 64 bit code. Whether the address bus is 64 bits wide or not hasn't got anything to do with the width of the internal data path and execution unit width.

    Thanks :D

To be honest I'm not all that well versed in the differences between 64bit and 32bit computing...

show me the law that says it'l illegal to notify other drivers of a cop checking speeds, or to notify the position of a DUI check point.

Most state courts have come down on the side of motorists who flash headlights as a signal, arguing that it is protected speech.

Where illegal, like Washington State, it's typically flashing high beams itself that isn't legal (safety reasons or whatever), and not the sharing of information about a speed trap.

It said a "case re-design", not a refresh of CPU, GPU, HDD, etc....

Why is everyone talking about a major technology refresh on a brand new MBP? My guess is that they opened up sweat shops in some third world country to file down the edges.... :-)

    Hi all.

If you look at Apple's iMac site today before the next announcement, you see "consistency" with the expected message of a 23" HDTV iMac and a video streaming enabled AirPort Express.

The product is currently positioned as a hub for your entertainment experience. If you are a leading edge user, you have already hooked a kickin' audio system via hardwire or AirPort Express.

    You already have remote control.

You already have, and share internet, printing, and even distributed content to computers in other rooms, presumably some of which are kickin' stereo enabled, all of which have access to your pool of media content.

Therefore in a real way such an announcement would be a relatively small harwdare upgrade while upgrading perception, desire and buzz emmensely.

They need a "significant hardware sales driver". Is this it?

Does this option in the iTunes7 intaller hint at the imminent release of the iPhone?
    http://idisk.mac.com/rnks/Public/iPhone-option.jpg

No, it doesn't. This is for phones like the ROKR and some other recent Motorolas that run a version of iTunes.

BTW this probably explains the nano firmware "revelation" too, we're probably looking at several applications (iPod, nano, ROKR, and other firmware) built from the same code base.

I hope this eventually leads to Sound Blaster support for macs.

    I hope not. We've been down that...well, it wasn't even a road...it was a road construction project.

Creative created a Fourpoint card, priced it like the DD5.1 card, and didn't work on the drivers past the initial release at a time when Mac OS X was becoming important, so it was never Mac OS X-compatible or reasonably good.

As far as the patent debates went, the filing system and visual access were patents that seemed all too generic.

GeekBench 2 benchmarks http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2011/02/macbookpro-benchmarks-early-2011/ of the new MBPs with Sandy Bridge would indicate otherwise. This review said: "....the fastest MacBook Pro is 80% faster than the fastest previous-generation MacBook Pro.". My guess is a similar situation might be true for the iMac and it will be faster ( otherwise, there's little point to a rev )

PatrickCocoa assesses the current iMac as being more than fast enough ( i.e. "won't be any slower"--or words to that effect ). Clearly, the current iMac exceeds the computing needs of most Mac users.

did you read the article above?

"Apple is still in talks with providers in other parts of the world on other exclusive deals"

    :D

Well, the cell phone markets work in different ways in different parts of the world. While the standard in the US, and other parts of the Americas, is that phone and network follows each other closely (which is why you have a lot of provider-specific phone models, even for the supposedly provider-independent GSM phones), most of Europe has a very weak connection between individual phones and networks.

Here, the most provider-specific you can go is to get a discounted (yet otherwise ordinary) phone if you sign up for a one-year subscription. Oh, and you may get your provider's GPRS/WAP/MMS settings pre-installed.

So, it would really be a first if Apple would get "provider-exclusive" distribution deals throughout Europe. And that's not considering the fact that there is no single provider that covers all of Europe, so they would have to go through the troubles of signing different deals in each country. In my thinking, that leads to Apple either dropping the European market, postponing the release in Europe until they have saturated the US market, or just release it on the general market. After all, I believe most of the European cell phones that are available on the US market as provider exclusive are sold "openly" (under slightly different names and color schemes) back here in Europe.

Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware and other malicious and unwanted software or programs. The idea that OSX and/or Unix/Linux based operating systems is free from such threats is absurd.

No one has presented the idea that Mac OS X is free from all malware threats. Since your reading comprehension might need some help, I'll repeat my statement again:
there is no Mac malware in the wild that can't be avoided with some common sense and prudent action on the part of the user.
Viruses for Mac OS X don't exist, so antivirus isn't needed to protect against them.
Trojans for Mac OS X do exist, but can be avoided by the user being careful what they install, so antivirus isn't needed to protect against them.

Meanwhile, the answer on here to avoiding potential pitfalls in things like Flash is to (surprise), not install or use it. Hey guys, don't power on your computers and you will always be safe!
I use Flash all the time and have never had any issues with it.

Even Apple themselves regularly release security updates. WTF is the point of a security update if there's no possible threat to OSX?
Again, no one has said there are not threats to Mac OS X; only that those threats don't require any AV software to defend against them.
Just because a threat is less likely than on other systems does not mean that it does not exist. Yet people on here won't even admit that much.
Either you're not reading or not comprehending the posts that have been made. No one is saying that NO threats exist; only that those threats can be avoided by the user without the need for AV software.

Only a fanboy would take a post that suggests that a false sense of security can lead to dangerous behavior that might be a liability in the future (good advice in almost any market/situation) and twist it into "Boy you're ignorant; we are INVULNERABLE! OSX cannot be hacked or attacked! It's impossible!
Who are you referring to? I haven't seen anyone say such things in this thread or any other.
    "fanboy"
Again, who are you referring to? I'm not a fanboy, or a boy of any kind. I have no allegiance or loyalty to any brand or manufacturer (except Harley-Davidson, but for very different reasons). It's amusing to see how people try to bash Apple or Macs for the wrong reasons, then resort to calling people "fanboys" when their arguments aren't accepted. Apple and Macs have plenty of weaknesses. Attack one of the legitimate ones and you'll have sensible people agree with you. Make a case against Apple or John Deere or Mattel or Coca-Cola or any other company that isn't based in fact, and you'll get resistance. That doesn't make those who oppose such a case "fanboys".

My take on this: Apple releases new MBP's next week and Aperture 2 at the special event. Kind of like they did with the iMac vs the movie downloads.

Btw, the 24th is a Sunday ... has Apple ever released anything on a Sunday? Or held an event?
