Torino V Piacenza Preview

Forget the Royal Wedding, the real event of the weekend takes place tomorrow when Torino take on Piacenza, knowing that a victory will boost their chances of participation in the end of season playoffs.

Torino currently sit in sixth position in the table, three points clear of their nearest rivals Padova, although the Granata will still believe they have a chance of overtaking Reggina is fifth place, as just one point separates the two sides. Their opponents on Saturday, Piacenza have their own motives for victory on Saturday, as they currently find themselves in a relegation battle, and whilst Torino will be doing their utmost to escape from Serie B, Piacenza will be content with just staying in the division.

Piacenza have not won a match since the 12th March, although they did achieve a creditable 2-2 draw in their last away game against high-flying Novara. Torino will be without Angelo Ogbonna and Guiseppe De Feudis who are both suspended, so Danilo D'Ambrosio and Alessandro Budel may return to the starting line up.

Is Gerrard past his best?

Typically Steven Gerrard has been seen as Liverpool's talismanic skipper, the driving force in the engine room who would take games by the scruff of the net and drag the Reds back from the jaws of defeat to clinch historic victories. His passion, determination and commitment to the club make him the most loved player amongst supporters and perfectly summarise the values inherent within the Liverpool Way.

However, although Gerrard has undoubtedly formed the heart and soul of the club alongside fellow scouser Jamie Carragher during their respective careers, the former's influence on proceedings has undeniably diminished this season and his performances have done little to suggest that he is any more special than any other player in that famous Red shirt.

Since scoring a stunning 24 goals in 2008/2009 Gerrard has failed to replicate the fine form that helped Liverpool to a second placed finish during that enthralling year, netting half as many times last season and only managing eight so far this campaign, on a par with the much maligned David Ngog.

This down turn in form coincided with an 18-month spell where Fernando Torres, who had previously linked up excitingly and excellently with Gerrard, suffered from poor form and failed to live up to the world-class status he enjoyed during his first few seasons on Merseyside.

With Spanish ace Xabi Alonso also returning to his homeland during the 2009 summer transfer window, the terrific triumvirate that had been at the heart of the Reds' title challenge was gradually eroding and Gerrard's form has suffered as a result. No longer receiving a constant source of passes from Alonso and unable to trust Torres to finish off any moves he orchestrated, Gerrard's role has steadily reduced and his influence on the pitch has been less tangible.

Another difficult and injury ravaged campaign this season has given Gerrard little chance of recovering his form and, with the 30-year old approaching the twilight of his career, his role in the side must surely be revised in order to accommodate for the burgeoning talent around him in the Reds' midfield.

Despite being without their captain since the beginning of March, Liverpool haven't missed Gerrard, instead embarking on a remarkable run which has seen the Reds comprehensively beat Manchester City, earn a hard fought and dramatic draw at the Emirates and claim their largest margin of victory this season against Carling Cup winners Birmingham.

Perhaps more significantly, conscientious midfielder Jay Spearing has been one of many youngsters to come to the fore during this spell, forming a flourishing relationship alongside Lucas, as the ever improving duo provide crucial support for their attack minded midfield partner Raul Meireles.

With the emergence of Lucas, Spearing and Meireles arrives more competition for Gerrard that, although obviously beneficial for the club, may mean that the Reds’ number 8 has to change his style of play. When in form Gerrard's preferred all action approach usually involves tough tackling, exhaustive running and sensational shooting, leaving his unmistakable imprint on every blade of grass on the famous Anfield turf.

Despite modifications by Benitez, who believed that he occasionally ran unwisely and unnecessarily, a desire to have an impact in every area of the pitch is a fundamental part of Gerrard's makeup. However, with age and injuries now catching up with him, Gerrard may have to move back to a holding midfield role in upcoming campaigns, where he could continue to make strong challenges and ping passes around Anfield, while not having to cope with the demanding role of a box-to-box midfielder.

Although as a Red I am loathe to praise Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, the unquestionably knowledgeable Scot has expertly changed the roles of ageing stars such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. As a result they have contributed to United's continued success, with Scholes' and Giggs' experience proving invaluable in the big games despite Neville's impromptu retirement earlier this season.

If, upon his inevitable permanent appointment, King Kenny can similarly successfully utilise Gerrard's abilities in a slightly different position then he could retain a crucal role in Liverpool's starting eleven for the forseeable future.

Don't Forget About The Strikers

With so much going on in the world of soccer it's hard to focus on what's really important around here.

Have you been sucked into the quadrangle "clasico" that is Real Madrid vs. Barcelona?

Are you crying over spilled milk over Real Salt Lake's disappointing display and loss in the CONCACAF Champions League Final?

Can't get enough of top-notch women's soccer in your backyard?

Well get a hold of yourselves! A true Striker Liker must look past all those things and focus on his/her team. The Strikers have improved with their first three outings, besting themselves each time out, starting with a loss, followed by a draw, then a dramatic late win.

Now comes our biggest test. This Friday marks the real start of the season. The Puerto Rico Islanders, defending champions and undefeated thus far, they will show the Strikers if there are contenders or pretenders.

Watch the game live here.

Side note, we are a less than a month away from the Strikers homecoming, hosting FC Tampa Bay. See you all there!

Biography - Brett Favre
Known for his extraordinary toughness, bravery, and unmatched passing skills, Brett Favre is one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. Currently on his way to passing records set by legendary QBs Dan Marino and John Elway, the Green Bay Packers behemoth has proved to be the most consistent NFL player of the last 15 years.

Favre was born in Gulfport, Mississippi on October 10, 1969 and grew up in nearby Kiln. His father Irvin coached Brett at Hancock North Central High School, where the promising footballer played QB, lineman, strong safety, placekicker, and punter. He went on to play for Southern Mississippi, winning several key games including a famous upset of sixth-ranked Florida State on September 2, 1989. A July 1990 car crash nearly ended his life, but Favre trudged on after extensive intestinal surgery, winning an incredible comeback victory against Alabama less than two months later and graduating in 1991 with a degree in special education. His degree and extensive work with disadvantaged children was used as a plot point in his hilarious cameo in “There’s Something About Mary”, which saw Favre appear as Cameron Diaz’s secret ex-boyfriend.
After college Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft, leading to a tumultuous debut year for the future star. Numerous clashes with coach Jerry Glanville combined with his poor performance led to a trade with the Packers, which unbeknownst to the Falcons jump-started the most phenomenal NFL career in recent memory. Favre’s turning point was a memorable 1992 game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he stepped in for QB Don Majkowski after the starter suffered an injury. Favre played poorly, leading fans to vocally demand that he be replaced by benched QB Ty Detmer, until Favre threw a commanding comeback touchdown in the game’s final seconds which won the Packers the game. Since then, Favre has started every Packers game for 14 years, a record streak of 244 games.

Called the ‘Iron Man of the NFL’, Favre has led the Packers since 1992 and has been pivotal in making the team a bona fide football dynasty. In 1997 the Packers handily defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, and advanced to the Bowl in 1998 as well, losing to the Denver Broncos. Favre holds a smattering of career records, including most seasons with 30 or more touchdown passes, most consecutive seasons with 3,000+ passing yards, and most NFL MVP awards. The 37 year-old QB will likely pass Dan Marino’s record of 420 career passing touchdowns before he retires. Truly the stuff that sports legends are made of, Favre’s era of dominance has been one of the most exciting in NFL history.

Dubai
