I hope well have a Core 2 Duo on a MBP soon. I've been thinking of selling my 20" G5 iMac and buying a 17" MBP.

Besides...who the h*ll is the government to tell Apple what they can and cannot do with their business? Regulations are one thing...such as safety regs and such...those are needed, but Christ...this is over the line.

The government tells Apple what they can and can't do all the time. That's why Jobs gets deposed, the FCC regulate their cell phones and Apple can't knock down your house to build an Apple Store on top of it or irradiate small Chinese kids to make the products for it.

If thousands can ask Apple to take down an anti-gay app then why not a few officials asking them to take down an app that gives drunken dicks an advantage?

If it was just 150,000 regular people asking Apple to take it down (MADD for example) would you have a problem with it?

I don't question the gaming issue, I just wonder what percentage of MBP buyers would not buy because of the Intel graphics. My uneducated guess would be a very small percentage. Remember, Apple caters to the average consumer, not the geeks.

That may be true but Apple does have the reputation of being 'a cut above the rest' when it comes to video and graphics.

With respect to all the "view with alarm" postings that will follow, this really doesn't mean anything. I leave my home at the same time every morning. The transponder in my car records my passage and debits my account with the state highway department. Traffic cameras record my license plate at several points during my journey. Once out of the car, my smiling phiz can be seen on any number of CCTVs en route to my office, whose door I open with a card that automatically records my entry. The IP address of this posting will reveal that I am sitting in my living room as I write. Even without the GPS turned on, my phone regularly initiates a conversation with the local cell tower. I can be found with almost pinpoint accuracy.

So I'm not exactly going to panic to learn that my computer and phone keep a record of my latitude and longitude that they don't share with anyone else.

The government already knows where I live, where I work, where I bank, and all kinds of other interesting information. It's how they collect their taxes and send me my mail.

If there were the slightest indication that liberals, atheists, and other enemies of the state were being tracked by their GPSes and rounded up, I'd be the first to the barricades. But there isn't. Our privacy is not based on "nobody knows", it's based on "nobody cares."

You're dead on. Use a GPS device in your car? Can be tracked. Onstar? Tracked. Red light cameras, CCTV at buildings, etc? Yep, tracked.

Well, I was disappointed, but not surprised.

Since no manufacturer is shipping until mid-September, it is no great shock that Apple did nothing today. Plus, they don't want to be grouped with those companies anyhow.

Some applications just can't be multithreaded and writing reliable multi threaded applications is damned hard still.

Back in the early 90s I was using ICL DAPs which had a grid of 1024 CPUs. You could fly through a Mandlebrot set in realtime or analyse weather patterns quicker than anything else at the time short of a couple of Crays. A Mac SE/30 however was quicker at handling files and we used to use that to handle the normal stuff.
1024 CPUs??? WOW... and I thought I had nasty simulations. :o
Still, dont you think that it is a terrible waste of computing power if the app doesnt take advantage of multiple processors, eventhough it might be very hard to write such an app? This is really not my field and I know far too little to have an opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

I think the HD DVD is out of control already.
    Interesting that you say that.

For those of us who have enjoyed videos over the years, we've had the following formats:

    - Beta
    - VHS
    - Super VHS
    - CED
    - LD, and it variants
    - DVD

    and now HD-DVD / Bluray

Maybe the key for the format change is to line the companies pockets!

Surely these apps fall foul of the rule about no lasting entertainment?

They seem pointless if you're already drunk to be able to use it.

I'm sorry, but if you're the guy that goes 70mph in the fast lane and refuses to move, you are at fault for what ever I chose to dish out to you, for not having the common courtesy to move your car.

You are going to kill someone or be killed with an attitude like that. It is sad that you think you can do whatever you want, and it is always someone else's fault.

Targeting is one thing. Successfully attacking is a completely different animal. They've been targeting OS X since it came out a decade ago. Successful attacks range from barely a blip on the radar to nonexistent, depending on how you define success. There's no reason to believe that attacks on IOS will be half as successful as the pitiful attacks on OS X.

Targeting isn't ever going to work if the users are aware of what an attack looks like. It's good that the system makes an attack as obvious as possible. Mac OS helps a lot in that regard but some users just never learn (blondes it's always the blondes who try and open attachments).

Not that anti virus helps after all it can't do anything unless they know of the attack as well. Having it installed just gives the user a reason to be complacent which is worse. It all comes down to training users.

Now, imagine it as the ultimate wireless computerless presentation remote:

    1. Make your Keynote or PowerPoint presentations on your Mac or PC-Windows.

    2. Save them to the SMART iPhone.

    3. Carry the iPhone with you and use it as a wireless computerless presentation remote.

WITH A HUGE HALO EFFECT on all corporate, education and domestic markets!!!

Samsung is starting to be less and less innovative, they really are setting down at the drawing board , scratching their heads trying to come up with a design and then....." bing!!! their iphone mail alert just popped off and there is their next cell design!!

So, when have Samsung been innovative? Is buying other company's tech innovative? Or expanding beyond their bread and butter grocery market innovative? I guess I'll wait till I hear from you on that one. Samsung are less innovative than any large company I've ever come across, only garnering wins by buying out other companies and stifling competition in their home country.

I don't like this IP move by Apple, but I'd pray for anything to stick Samsung in the pink-as-kiss arse it has from doing absolutely nothing other than cramming the world with branch after branch of its expansionist policy.

... the provocative and renowned philosopher Cartman...

This complicates the already thorny dilemma I'd been wrestling with in this thread. Whose words should win my confidence? Whose direction on this issue should I trust? "crap freakboy"? Maybe. Some of his comments make sense, but i'm thinking, if i met him on the street and he was introduced that way, would i stay and listen...or run? Then there's "jelloshotsrule"? He's shown some insight, but you know how you can evaluate comments differently after you've seen a guy throwing up after chugging too much at a frat party? And now there's a third choice, a cartoon character? It turns out, the nine-year-old in the red jacket resolved my dilemma:

    "Cartman: Respect My Authority!"

Can the current imacs support a 24" Dell widescreen in dual monitor mode?

Yeah... it's the 30" displasys that need a special graphics card.

OK, I'm new to Macs, and so I've never made a What's-Steve-gonna-do-next prediction before, but you guys are having too much fun; so I'm gonna give it a try!

I think Apple set a precedent with the release of the C2D IMacs. It was a quiet release, and Steve didn't even mention them at Tuesday's presentation. I don't see why he would do anything different with the MBP's, unless Apple is releasing a drastically new model of the MBP, which I doubt since they have not even been out a year. So, if we get C2D MBP around this event, it will be next Tues or Wed, and it will be a semi-quiet release, just like the IMacs.

I do think we'll see new cinema displays. Apple recently dropped the price of the current models and "updated" the specs, but I'm not convinced that there was actually any change in the hardware. There is no standardization to the monitor specs, so there's probably quite a bit of freedom that can be taken into assigning the different numbers. I called Apple store a few weeks ago to ask them about the new specs, and the guy didn't even know they had changed! I think the recent price drop signals an upgrade in the near future, and what better forum than a photography convention?

Of course, I also think Aperture 2 will be there as well. I would also guess at new ISight cameras. The old ones are definitely starting to show their age, especially for the price.

    So to sum up:

    1. Possible quiet release of C2D MBP next week.
    2. Aperture 2, ISight camera, and new displays on the 24th.

    Just my thoughts.

    That was fun!

An anonymous source claims that U2's Bono will announce a RED (http://www.joinred.com/) version of Apple's 4 GB iPod tomorrow during his appearance on Oprah. The show was apparently taped today in Chicago, and Oprah.com (http://www.oprah.com/) has the following to say about tomorrow's show:

Get "red"-y! It's something so huge, it took Opray, Bono and a convertible to make it happen! Plus, Penelope Cruz and Kanye West are in on it! An extraordinary launch! [...] Chicago goes "red" today and this is just the beginning!

The show was apparently taped today, and will be aired tomorrow, October 13th. Rumors of a RED iPod (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060131123048.shtml) have been circulating since January. According to our source, the RED iPod would be priced similarly to current 4 GB models at $199, with $10 (5%) of each sale going to The Global Fund to help women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa, where some countries have over 30% of the population affected by the disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS_pandemic#Sub-Saharan_Africa).

I assume the screen would be a touch screen. I would hate to start dialing numbers using the click wheel.

I actually like the idea. There could be a virtual dial on the screen like an old school phone.

    Silly me, though! :)
