Seriously though. What are the chances of new display? I plan on buying one soon. If I did buy it next week, and they released new ones on the 25th could I return my old one?

Is there a restocking fee? Thanks.

It's all guessing here of course, but I would wait until the Photokina event before you buy that display. After they dropped the prices on their current cinema displays at WWDC over a month ago, it became sort of apparent to me that that is probably an inventory clearing strategy to make room for new, larger Cinema Displays to be unveiled at Photokina.

If you need the display now though, they are cheaper than they've ever been, so it would be a good time to buy. If you can wait, wait.

    I second this prediction

I don't really feel like reading the article from the Chicago Tribune again, but I believe (though, due to my lack of reading it again, I may be creating a major faux-pas) that it said that she bought ten of the red iPods... so unless she only has 10 guests, I'm doubting that EVERYONE will get one; however, I do agree that there will be some sort of giveaway.

    Cheers

I'm not sure why there is so much argument about the term "app". The trademark is for "App Store" not for "app". It would be like arguing that "Burger King" is not a valid trademark because "burger" is a generic term.

    What about "Burger Store" ?

Not sure if it's already been pointed out, but GAP is also releasing a Red line of clothes tomorrow to support AIDS in Africa. I wonder if Oprah will be visiting various retail stores supporting the Red thing tomorrow.

I really want the Red SLVR phone, but it's not sold here.

Because I am going to. I'm a completely safe driver (even when doing 90 or above) until I run into some dunderhead who has to enforce the speed limit themselves. Had that woman just moved like everyone else did, I would have never had to cut her off in order to punish her. And yes I did have to punish her, because she needed to be taught her dang place on the road.

EDIT: @adk - yes I am 16, however in this situation my mother was in the car and actually encouraged me to cut the idiot off. So it's not just an age based thing.

    -Don
Okay fine, you're an ******* and your mother's an ******* too.
Come back and talk to me when you have 5 years under your belt.

Remember one thing Dmac. YOU ARE A CRAPPY DRIVER and will be consider a crappy driver until you have 5 years under your belt. At that point then we can start judging you on how you drive.
The studies may say it, but I see plenty of people with over 5 years of experience that still don't know wtf they're doing.
You deserve a bad rap:rolleyes: There is nothing illegal going 5 under. It is illegal to be going 20 over. If you get caught, that is like an auto revocation of your license to give you an idea how serious it is
Depends. I've been pulled over for 20+ on the highway and gotten warnings (and sometimes a ticket). Now, do 20 over in a school zone, and you won't get off so easy...
The simple fact is that I should not have to obey a 70mph speed limit if I don't want to.
Fine, go over. I do all the time. But remember that you do so at your own risk, and that you need reaction time in case some idiot (i.e. the minivan driver or one such as yourself) doesn't check before changing lanes.

Why would I even bother driving a car that can hit 186mph (with the speed governor removed, with the governor top speed is 155mph) at 70 mph? A Ford Fiesta can hit those speeds, what's the point of fast cars if you're going to follow the speed limit in them?
They're called track days. You get to flog a car with little worry about random pedestrians or people being in the wrong lane. And where the **** do you expect to hit anything even close to 155 on a public highway, especially in an area prone to potholes? US Highways are not designed with 100+ in mind, they are not maintained with 100+ in mind, and they are not enforced with 100+ in mind. Also, read this (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/03/t-top-enzo-destroyed-in-high-speed-crash/). TLDR: Guy drives his Enzo on a public road at almost 200mph (the road was closed for a charity event he was participating in). He hits a bump and goes airborne. Smash crash, now he has several broken bones, bruises, and probably surgery on his thumb. And this is in a car that produces north of 500lb of downforce at those speeds (1700lbs at 221mph). Plus, it's built with a carbon fiber survival cell, which an M5 does not have. Keep that in mind before you try to test the limits of a vehicle on public roads.
I really don't think it is necessary to call me or any member of my family "pathetic." There's nothing wrong with manipulating the system to your advantage, if you do it for a valid purpose (such as teaching a crappy driver a lesson).

    -Don
It's completely necessary to call you and your family pathetic. Your mother caused a collision, and then lied about it in court. Now she encourages you to do the same. And OF COURSE there is something wrong with manipulating the system to your advantage, no matter the reason. Plus, that you think having a judge for an uncle gives you sway is incredibly unethical, especially if he does indeed help you out, he would be in violation of the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct. Specifically: Canon 2
A Judge Should Avoid Impropriety and the Appearance of Impropriety in All Activities
    A. Public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by irresponsible or improper conduct by judges. A judge must avoid all impropriety and appearance of impropriety. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny. A judge must therefore accept restrictions on conduct that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen and should do so freely and willingly.
    B. A judge should respect and observe the law. At all times, the conduct and manner of a judge should promote public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary. Without regard to a person's race, gender, or other protected personal characteristic, a judge should treat every person fairly, with courtesy and respect.
    C. A judge should not allow family, social, or other relationships to influence judicial conduct or judgment. A judge should not use the prestige of office to advance personal business interests or those of others. A judge should not appear as a witness in a court proceeding unless subpoenaed.
Oh, and I have to guess that your uncle is one of these people (http://judgepedia.org/index.php/Michigan_judicial_elections,_2010#District_Courts). He's not anonymous, we just don't know which one he is.
You're also the guy that will wreck his car because I force you to, and you're also the guy that I will then sue to pay for my deductible and any applicable medical costs. And I'm the guy that will laugh in your face and say "gonna move for me next time?" as I walk out of court and you cut me a check.
I can guarantee you, that if you tried this **** on me. Not only would we BOTH wreck, but you wouldn't even get the chance to sue me.
Why should I care what people think of me.

It's generally people with this attitude that have it come around to bite them in the ass.

I can only say that I hope, when you wreck, you not only kill yourself, but your mother too.

Only on UNOPENED product. If you've opened it, you gotta pony up 10% restocking fee, if you bought from apple. They will refund money if there is a price drop in that timeframe, though.

Doesn't matter if it has been opened. I bought an iMac right before the new ones came out, it was bto with the upc cut out and sent in for the free iPod offer. They gave a FULL refund with no restocking fee, even I made sure they knew it was opened with the upc cut off. This policy is different than their normal return policy.

I guess the counter argument would be that an application is a type of program, not a part of a program. (which I personally would disagree with. As I understand, the individual binary is an application, where the program is the sum of the binaries, libraries, resource files, etc...)

Actually, the individual binary is an executable.

Web Apps are complex, contain client side code, server side code, datasets, data models, etc..

Applications and Programs are pretty much interchangeable and describe the whole. MS actually got it wrong in that Explorer screenshot, .EXE should simply say Executable and .DLL should simply say dynamically linked library.

So what? They're already getting sued by Apple, so what's another lawsuit? Point is, contract breach or not, Samsung could cripple Apple's whole ecosystem within days by halting all processor shipments. Apple makes the vast majority on iDevices and this would kill Apple's whole economic model. And this doesn't even account for Samsungs components that go into their Macs. As a result, Apple would have no hardware to sell. They would dip into their treasure chest. It could be devastating to Apple.

And then Apple would ruin Samsung, cratering them with winning lawsuits. Also, Samsung would lose their reputation in the supply chain as well as their credibility, and it would likely damage the Korean economy as a whole, and South Korea politically as well. You're talking about one company causing problems for tens of millions of consumers, and a mountain of negative news. If Samsung wanted to be bankrupted within a decade, this would be a way, for sure.

Yeah I don't think that is going to happen. I can't see Apple making a CDMA phone just for Verizon/Sprint. Making a GSM phone, especially if it is quad-band, would allow them to only make 1 phone for the world market.

Right, so problem #1 is the huge number of Verizon/Sprint customers in the US Apple would be giving up just for the sake of saving the engineering time to replace a radio chip. There's no way they can give up 60 million or so potential customers and say to their investors, "yeah, but we'll save a million dollars over the next three years by doing it."

Problem #2 is that there are countries/regions where CDMA is more prevalent than GSM or where GSM doesn't exist at all. Some of it has to due with terrain, some of it is political. There are lists on the web you can google for which countries use which technology.

I was hoping Apple would be the first company to use software-defined radios and make this a non-issue. I was bummed when I read they switch to COTS parts for the quick buck on iTunes. Maybe the other two rumored phones which are supposed to come later will be the one we were hoping for. June 2007?

Cingular has their priorities wrong. They go for the rural markets, where people don't want to have anything to do with cell phones, and they ignore the big cities.

Huh? I've never seen Cingular coverage in any rural areas. Maybe in the mid-south but the rest of the country isn't so uniform.

When will we see global releases of iTunes stuff?

When your local media cartel decides to play ball. You think Apple doesn't want to be selling into your market for nearly $0 their cost?

Sorry, but I'm not. I try and avoid idiots on the highway. But why do I get the feeling that you are going to tell me that driving 90+ is perfectly safe cause you are such a wonderful driver.

:confused:For that to happen, people would have to want to buy a Windows phone... I'm pretty sure hardly anyone I know even realizes that the platform has undergone a major revamp recently.

My personal opinion is that WP7 is a decent OS, but I just don't see this being a possibility with the meager selection in WP7 software.I agree. I have met only ONE person ever to have a Windows phone. Everywhere I go, iPhones are by far the #1 phone I see.

Yes because everyone loves to carry around external breakout boxes with their sleek portable Macbooks....

And $10? For Thunderbolt? You are DREAMING. You can't even get a decent USB2 hub for $10.
Yeah because everyone loves to carry around an external hard drive with their sleek portable MacBooks.

God forbid you carry around an inch long adapter in your laptop bag. Is that too much for you?

Oh and here's some adapter prices for you:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10404

Twice the performance of USB3? That would be Thunderbolt's maximum possible data rate. No single consumer hard drive on earth supports that kind of speed (let alone even USB3's top speed) so I haven't a clue what you're getting at. Why would someone pay MORE to get a drive that is no faster than a USB3 drive? LOL, are you kidding me bro? Do you think USB 3 peaks out at it's max 5 Gbps? YOU are the one dreaming if you believe that. Here's some more evidence for your FUD:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCz_c_rDAXw

USB 3 would completely choke in that situation let alone in a simply hard drive speed comparison. Give me a break. Here's another example for you to look at for some REAL WORLD USB 3 speeds:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrtwtSjzjZI

In reality with USB 3 you get about 480 Megabits as opposed to the promised 5 Gpbs meaning Thunderbolt will be even faster than two times.

They would almost certainly have to as demand determines price/availability and there is nearly zero demand for TB devices at this point in time while USB3 are backwards compatible with the vast majority of the computers on the planet. My sales figures are based on the relative cost of drives with Firewire interfaces (the closest example that already exists to Thunderbolt in terms of technology versus low demand) against drives that only support USB2 and/or USB3. There is always a large premium for a drive with a FW interface, even today when a fair amount of computers exist with FW interfaces (i.e. SOME demand). So you are just ASSUMING that they will cost $250 more than USB 3 drives. OK, let's make that clear. You have no evidence to support that your $250 price difference has any validity other than the fact that FireWire drives were more expensive when it's already been explained twice and back why Thunderbolt won't be as 'exclusive' as FireWire. It's going to be on every Ivy Bridge chipset just like USB 3.0 is. Everyone's going to be using it, it's another checkmark for them to list. Why do you think PC manufactures still sell machines with eSata?

Therefore TB compatible drives will likely cost considerably more money than USB3 drives for the SAME underlying drive. You will pay a premium for the interface just like Firewire to offset the higher costs of low production numbers created by little demand compared to USB3/2 interfaces. There will be no speed advantage on a consumer drive because no consumer drive even comes CLOSE to the limits of either interface. So unlike YOUR $10 scenario, I didn't just make a number up out of thin air. Furthermore, the scenario is hardly half-baked given USB drives are already common at places like Best Buy (I personally already own TWO 3TB USB3 drives) so the unlikely 'friend' in the stated scenario would be more likely to already own a USB3 drive than a currently non-existent TB drive that will undoubtedly cost MORE when it does finally arrive.LOL, words can't describe how wrong you are. You think HDD speeds cap out at 480 Mbps? Maybe in your 'practical world' where you enjoy using inferior technology because it's 'what you're used to' that's the case. But for everyone else Thunderbolt will be a massive performance gain. Let alone when external SSD's really start hitting the market. USB 3 will really be proven for the piece of trash that it is and get wasted on all bandwidth comparisons. USB 3 is capped at a theoretical transfer rate of 5 Gbps. Thunderbolt is currently at 10 Gbps and can scale up to 100 Gbps in the future.

TB is more suited to high-end professional use where maximum overall data throughput (probably across multiple banks of drives per interface) and low overhead is desired (e.g. professional video, future high-speed server banks, live audio, etc.) The average consumer doesn't want to pay $50-100 more for FW800 drive interface over USB2 today (nor is their computer even likely to have FW if it's not a Mac) even if does have a benefit over USB2. They certainly aren't going to want to pay a potentially larger premium to get the same relative performance (perhaps with a bit of CPU overhead differences) versus USB3 with today's drives that don't come near USB3 levels, let alone Thunderbolt.Same relative performance? LMAO

Thunderbolt is suited for the future of high data transfer speeds that SSD's are capable of. Who wants the bottleneck to be the port on their computer? Because that's all USB 3 is going to be.

Be my guest and continue to insult and rant and dream big of TB heaven where USB doesn't exist. I live in a more practical and logical world.
Your 'practical world' when you were just talking about how no one will pay a premium for USB 3. Well the reason why no one's going to pay a premium for USB 3 is because it's a garbage update over USB 2.0. Thunderbolt will scale to the future. USB 3 is going to be trapped in limbo no matter what new peripherals come out down the road and given that it took them 8 years to release it a couple of years down the road when Thunderbolt is scaling even faster than USB 3. The only thing USB 3 is going to be used for down the road is nothing that USB 2 couldn't handle.

I've always wondered what Windows's market share comes from pirated copies of Windows. There's a lot of pirated copies out there.. a lot..

And they still managed to sell 350 million licenses of Windows 7 in 18 months. That's insane! I am telling you... I would like to sit in that room in either Redmond or Cupertino where you see the profit tote board being updated every second, or every minute or whatever. It must just make someone dizzy. Microsoft doesn't sell hardware. Apple does and mobile devices make up a large part of Apple's sales and revenue. They are a tiny blip on the radar percentage wise as far as pc's are concerned, no matter how you spin the numbers. 90% >4.6%. And yes, Apple makes a tremendous amount of money on the products they sell, far more than anyone else, and I realize that most of you take a tremendous amount of personal pride in the money Apple makes. And as a consumer, I find that absolutely bizarre. But that's just me.

As a consumer, it is not irrelevant how much money a company makes when it comes to choosing a product or service to purchase. Apple being super-profitable is comforting to the extent that it means the Apple ecosystem will be sustainable for years to come.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, while I agree that the news of its death is highly exaggerated, the current state of things is worrying as far as it means the company, despite its very high market-share in PC OS, is not anymore an industry leader as in bringing out bleeding-edge innovation and inspiring the market: outside of Windows, Office and the XBox, all their initiatives are abysmal failures. That doesn't mean that Microsoft is doomed: it has a high potential and the money for bouncing back, but that will be at the cost of tough, painful decisions they have to make NOW. And meanwhile, the actual leaders, namely Apple and Google are not going to sleep.

I have never been more happy to be proven wrong. But now: Steve has been lying to us about the capabilities of this great iPod 5G for nearly a year now, just so we wouldn't anticipate the iTunes Movie Store.

Lying? Come on. It already supported 640 in mpeg4, he never said it couldn't support other resolutions in the future with a firmware/software update. Did he ever say, "The hardware makes it impossible to ever support 640 with h.264"? No.

Disregarding the poster you were responding to, humans are animals and are the result of natural selection just as much as any other species on the planet. Funny how the intro of a red iPod has led to me posting this.

I think the pict. of the iPod is awesome and I think they will sell well on color alone.

How to make it a best seller:

Being a true smart phone, capable of booting Mac OS X mobile (to be released) and thus being used as a wireless computerless remote for Keynote and PowerPoint presentations made on Mac or Windows.

Will sell millions on corporate, education and domestic markets.

    With a huge halo effect!!!

That was my thought as well. Just as they did with the iPod and consumer identification. They could make serious inroads in business by showing them how to do integration right while looking cool at the same time. Blackberries and Treos are an integral part of the business person's life right now and introducing a phone with those functions (done better of course) in a beautiful form could change a lot of perceptions about Apple in the business community.
Apple could change their marketshare dramatically by getting businesses to 'switch'. With the option of running XP on Macware, its no longer an impossibility. Steve has been able to anticipate the consumer market pretty well, maybe he could do the same in the business arena.

Of course Apple need to do more than just impress general Mac users like you guys. Like with the iPod, if they want big success, they're going to have to get to grips with an entirely new scene, culture even, and bring it's adherents something new.

As someone who considers film as influential in his upbringing as his family and friends even, I'm looking for Apple to honor the spirit of film rather than just crank out downloadable movies like the lack-luster businesses who suck all the art and atmosphere out of the DVD market.

Forget music, this is the big one. Apple are dealing with the most powerful art form on the planet, they'd better do it justice.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what they have to offer les fanatiques du cinema, but I'm optimistic.
