There are people trying to paint this as though any tablet or mobile phone is similar to the rest so Apple has no case. Not true. Apple is suing one company for a copy so close that it is hard to see the difference.

Looks like Apple copied palm just changed the background to white and the icons to a square!
LOL - right. And that pinch and zoom feature on the palm was tremendous.

And replace backlight with Braille print? Cool, it would save some battery juice at night. By the way, I don't look at the keyboard when typing. Are you?

My nano is already on eBay awaiting a nice metal clad 8GB version, I hope they do an andonised black one though to match my other gadgets.
already on ebay? nice. now you don't have to worry too much about it depreciating in value with apple's new product. i've been holding out on a new ipod to see what devilry they come up with this time. i take it the movies on itunes will be 'download to own'?

We waited 334 days for this? That is how long we went without an iPod update, by far the longest gap in updates, and all we get is larger storage capacity and a few new games?
In the past 2 quarters, for the first time since Apple introduced the iPod, iPod sales have declined. Last quarter, Apple sold just over 8 million iPods, down from a peak of over 14 million 2 quarters ago. The reason is because people bought new iPods, and there was no reason to replace them because it took Apple so long to update the models. Now, after all of the wait (nearly a year) and speculation about 16x9 video iPods, touch-screen controls, wireless capabilities, etc., I think this update will go mostly unnoticed to consumers and iPod sales will continue to fall. Apple needs to drastically change and improve iPod offerings if it wants to maintain its market advantage and keep the iPod fashionable.

Pretty sure new iPod is still classed as 5G.
I was wondering about that too. These are all great upgrades though. I'm very pleased with this keynote.

I stopped by my local Apple store and had a similar experience. Actually, it was a bit worse... they still had the old iMacs out and when I asked about the new ones, I was told "What new iMacs?"
Did you log into store.apple.com and show them? :D

Thunderbolt is not a supplement to DisplayPort. It is a downgrade to DisplayPort.
I'd disagree based on the last demo by intel.

I was under the understanding that the reason that the current 320M has been so impressive considering the aging Duel Core CPU was the increased speed of data transfer from the SSD meaning a large increase in efficiency in both the CPU and the GPU.
So surely it stands to reason that if the intergrated GPU of Sandy Bridge is only slightly less powerful than the current 320M but will be partnered with the SSD and a MASSIVELY more powerful CPU then the sandy bridge MBA will be at least as powerful in graphics terms than the currant MBA.
Am I just being stupid thinking that?
320M has OpenCL. Intel does not have OpenCL. All Intel graphics are thus bad.

you don't remember www.jailbreakme.com last year? you swipe and it installs all kinds of code on your iphone
Wrong. It takes more than a swipe. It requires user interaction.
Is there nothing AV trolls won't stoop to in their vain efforts to sell their useless software?

2012... 18 month update cycle? Far, far too long. No way... If that's the case, for the first time in 27 years, Apple doesn't get my money.
August 2006
January 2008 - 17 months later
March 2009 - 14 months later
July 2010 - 16 months later
While spring is possible the processors are to be launched in Q4. It is more likely to be under 18 months, but there is nothing out of the ordinary. Only the 2010 models seemed to be on Apple's time line rather than Intels.
Of course, part of the reason why people are hesitant to buy them is because they are the last to be updated... even though they are the most expensive product Apple has.
They have actually been the first to be updated for most of the time because Intel launched new technology on these platforms first. First to get 65nm Core 2 processor technology, first to get 45nm Penryn Core 2, first to get Nehalem (Core i5/i7). If Apple had updated on time in 2010 they'd have been first then to get Westmere (Apple released 4 months after the processor launch). Intel have changed their release schedule from enthusiast and Enterprise coming first with the move to Sandy Bridge, mostly because the benefits are more to the mobile market due to power savings.

Apple HAS to file a lawsuit in this case.
If they did not, then they open the door to not being able to protect their assets in court down the road if someone else tries to copy anything Apple offers.
Non-issue here people. Just playing by the rules of the game.
actually, this is true. at least in the US, if you fail to defend your copyrights or trademarks in court, that constitutes abandonment of said copyrights and trademarks, which then legally entitles anyone to freely use them. so yes, apple is required to sue anyone who makes a suspiciously similar looking product.

I am quite sure that the software writers will take full advantage of the current hardware.
Isnt it normally so, that apps push the evolution of the hardware?
Some applications just can't be multithreaded and writing reliable multi threaded applications is damned hard still.
Back in the early 90s I was using ICL DAPs which had a grid of 1024 CPUs. You could fly through a Mandlebrot set in realtime or analyse weather patterns quicker than anything else at the time short of a couple of Crays. A Mac SE/30 however was quicker at handling files and we used to use that to handle the normal stuff.

can someone tell me how to do that quick scroll thingee? i get it sorta randomly.
I just tried it, it seems to trigger when I make 2 or 3 revolutions on the scroll week. I'm already liking it a lot, a very welcomed new feature :)

Widgets would be a phone killer... Some of the widgets out there consume a lot of memory.
I figure they could sort that out. Widgets only activate when button pushed etc.

Software options are an epic fail more expensive than Apple's own Mac app store:eek:
That's because you got the physical DVDs included.
Anyway, I'm not getting these Rev A... Kidding! ;)

Kind of a huge gap, don'cha think? For an extra $100 I can nearly TRIPLE the capacity? Why would I even consider a 30 GB model?
A lot of people just don't need the bigger capacity. And it's still thinner, right??
I would buy a 30GB if I was in the market (which I'm not) for a new iPod. I just really don't need more than 30GB.
This is a stupid update. Not anything important.
I was a little bit sad that my iPod would probably be out-dated by today. But yeah right, it's not. But of course everyone already knew that it's still 5G.... Where's our iPhone, Steve?

This may be a really dumb question, but when the new MBP comes out, do y'all think it'll stay aroudn the same price range or increase?
I'd guess stay the same or maybe even decrease depending on the price Apple gets on Merom chips.
